Rotary advocacy brings statewide recognition to the global fight to eradicate polio.
Rotary’s commitment to ending polio has received special recognition in Illinois. Governor J.B. Pritzker has officially proclaimed October 24, 2026, as World Polio Day in Illinois, recognizing Rotary’s decades of leadership in the global effort to eradicate this devastating disease.
The proclamation was made possible through the efforts of Past Rotary International Director Bob Stuart of Springfield, Illinois, whose work helped secure this important recognition.
The proclamation acknowledges Rotary’s longstanding partnership with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Gates Foundation, and other global partners through the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. It recognizes Rotary’s contributions of more than $2.9 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect children from polio around the world.
It also highlights the importance of continued vigilance, advocacy, immunization, and collaboration as the world works toward eradicating polio once and for all.
The proclamation recognizes the Rotary Clubs of Chicago Southeast and Springfield for joining Rotary International and partners worldwide in observing World Polio Day and raising awareness of the global commitment to ending polio.
World Polio Day, observed annually on October 24, provides an opportunity for Rotarians, community leaders, and partners to celebrate the progress made toward eradication while reminding the public that the work is not yet finished.
For Rotary members across Region 36 — Zones 25B and 29 — this recognition is an inspiring example of how advocacy at the state level can amplify Rotary’s global mission. By engaging government leaders and raising public awareness, Rotarians help keep polio eradication a priority.
Congratulations to Bob Stuart and everyone who helped make this recognition possible. Illinois’ proclamation is another meaningful step in spreading awareness and strengthening the worldwide commitment to a polio-free future.
Together, we can make history. End Polio Now!
