More than 50 people gathered in Memorial Park at the Berlin Wall Exhibit to unveil the Peace Pole, dedicated to peace in Rapid City. The Peace Pole is one of only four erected in the state and the effort was organized by the Rapid City Rushmore Rotary Club and Rapid City Rotary Club (District 5610).
Each side of the pole displays the words ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’ in four languages: Lakota, English, German and Japanese.
Speakers recited the words of peace and shared remarks at the ceremony: Sandra White Shield, Tom Odean, Jeremy and Hiromi Altman and Rotary District 5610 Governor Bruce Nearhood.
City Council member Pat Roseland shared a mayoral proclamation recognizing October 5 as Peace Day in Rapid City, recognizing the importance of peace poles as inspiring peace and unity among all cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds.
